The City of Aspen Electric System provides reliable, renewable, and economic electric service to approximately 3,000 residential, commercial, hotel, and condominium service connects. All service is within Aspen City limits.
A majority of the electrical system was put underground by two major projects in 1976 and 1986.

Electric Standards & Specifications for Electric Installation & Use
The City of Aspen Electric Department is dedicated to providing safe, economical and reliable service to its customers. It is the policy of the City of Aspen to serve its customers in an orderly manner and assist in securing a more beneficial use of electricity. The "City of Aspen Electric Department Energy Standard for Electric Installation and Use" contains the requirements and uniform standards necessary to achieve this policy. Uniform enforcement of these standards throughout the City of Aspen will expedite service connections and treat each of our customers equally and fairly. Therefore, our employees are instructed and obligated to require adherence to these standards and procedures.
The City of Aspen Electric Department is responsible for:

- Street Lights
- Hanging Main Street Banners

The Electric Department must expand the electric system facilities to accommodate new development without decreasing current reliability and service standards. The Electric Department distributes electricity to the customers in its service area by means of an integrated and interdependent system-wide network of electric facilities. The Electric Community Investment (ECI) fee will be charged to any customer requesting services for new development and expansion of existing services within the service area. The ECI will provide additional capital to the Electric Department to pay for a portion of the new facilities needed to deliver electric services to new and expanded services. Effective January 1, 2018, all residential, commercial and city facilities customers of the Aspen Electric Department shall pay the ECI fee.

No. It is required that you contact the Colorado 811t for a line locate. This is for your safety and for the protection of electric transmission lines. Call 811 to schedule a locate.
