[ARCHIVED] APD to host ‘Ready to Rescue: Emergency preparedness for caregivers’

Press release

APD to host ‘Ready to Rescue: Emergency preparedness for caregivers’

Aspen, CO — The city of Aspen, in collaboration with Pitkin County and Aspen Fire, is proud to present the second annual emergency preparedness event, titled “Ready to Rescue.”

This year’s event focuses on providing essential emergency preparedness information for caregivers responsible for children, elderly loved ones, individuals with disabilities, and pets. Emergencies can strike at any time — how prepared are you to protect everyone in your household?

This event is part of Aspen’s ongoing effort to raise awareness and empower the community to be ready in the face of disaster. On the heels of National Preparedness Month in September, “Ready to Rescue” emphasizes the importance of proactive planning for all members of a household.

"Caregivers are the first line of defense when it comes to ensuring the safety of those who depend on them during emergencies," said Aspen Police Chief Kim Ferber. "This event is designed to provide caregivers with the tools and knowledge they need to protect everyone in their care, from small children to elderly family members and even pets. Being prepared can make all the difference in a crisis."

The event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Aspen City Hall, 427 Rio Grande Place, on the third floor in the Pearl Pass room.

What you’ll learn:

  • Comprehensive emergency planning: Develop emergency plans for everyone in your household, including children, seniors, and individuals with special needs.
  • Assembling emergency kits: Learn how to build customized emergency kits for all members of your family, including pets, ensuring their unique needs are met.
  • Expert guidance: Make your home safer for all occupants, including how to mitigate your property to prevent wildfire by identifying vulnerable structures, reduce on-the-ground fuels and protect evacuation routes.
  • Caring for the elderly and disabled: Gain insights into tailored plans for those with mobility issues or medical needs during emergencies.
  • Emergency preparedness for children: Understand how to keep children calm and secure during an emergency and starting the conversation of how to prepare now.
  • Learn about resources: Gain clarity around terminology such as “shelter in place,” “areas of refuge” and evacuation orders.

Why attend?

  • To ensure you have a comprehensive plan to protect your whole household.
  • To learn how to receive emergency alerts and messages.
  • If you are a caregiver, how to get resources to your loved ones.
