Aspen, Colorado – August 7, 2018 – Due to user demand, the City of Aspen’s Rio Grande Parking Garage just increased its electric vehicle (EV) charging capacity by four spaces, bringing the total number of EV charging spaces there to seven.
“Over the past year we’ve seen steadily rising use of the City’s public charging stations and in June, the number of charging sessions jumped by over 25%, compared to the month before. The new stations will allow us to meet increasing demand,” said Laura Armstrong, City of Aspen Climate Action and Sustainability Programs Associate.
The new chargers have universal plugs and charge an EV from empty to full in 4-6 hours. As with all City of Aspen stations, charging an EV is free, though normal parking rates apply. Two of the spaces in the Rio Grande garage are ADA accessible. This installation project was supported by a grant from the Colorado Energy Office.
Installing EV infrastructure is part of the Aspen Community EV Readiness Plan, which Council adopted in 2017. A map of all public charging stations in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley can be found here. The City offers free parking in residential zones for all-electric cars.
Now through October the valley-wide EV Sales EVent offers discounts on specific EV models. On September 14th the City will host an EV Ride and Drive event. The City of Aspen encourages everyone to walk, bike, and bus. If you must drive, please carpool and consider driving a zero-emissions electric vehicle.
