City of Aspen Announces Upgrades to Traffic Control System

Aspen, CO – In partnership with the state, The City of Aspen has announced an upgrade to its traffic control system that will enhance resiliency and efficiency. These changes will begin Monday, October 23rd at 8:30 a.m. with an estimated end time of 3:00 p.m. every day to mitigate traffic impacts. This project aims to create smoother, safer, and more responsive traffic conditions for our community.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)
The biggest component of this upgrade includes the installation of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to all traffic signals. The purpose of these UPS units is to ensure that traffic signals remain operational for at least an hour during power outages. “The implementation of Uninterruptible Power Supplies represents a vital enhancement to Aspen’s traffic system, safeguarding its operation even during power outages,” said Trish Aragon, City Engineer.
Traffic Control Camera for Improved Detection
The City of Aspen is replacing the current in-ground loop detection technology with state-of-the-art Traffic Control Cameras to enhance traffic flow and improve infrastructure endurance. These cameras provide a more durable solution that also adapts to real-time road conditions.
Pete Rice, Director of Transportation, stated “Our next-generation Traffic Control Camera are designed with both adaptability and durability in mind. Whether you’re on Main Street at midnight or stuck in rush hour traffic, these new systems minimize unwarranted delays. Unlike in-ground systems, these cameras are impervious to common road issues like potholes, ensuring consistent performance and safety.”
Minimal Traffic Impacts
The Uninterruptable Power Supplies and the new Traffic Control Camera will be installed outside of high traffic hours to cause minimal disruption. The expected completion of these upgrades is Wednesday, October 25th.
