[ARCHIVED] City of Aspen Emphasizes High Water Safety Precautions

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

City of Aspen Emphasizes High Water Safety Precautions

Aspen, Colo. – June 16, 2023 – Due to snowmelt and flooding in the Lower Arkansas Valley, high water conditions may rise in the Roaring Fork River around June 16, 2023. Current river flows vary from approximately 250 to 350 cubic feet per second (cfs) and may increase an additional 200-300 cfs. If you plan to enjoy our local rivers and streams, the City of Aspen encourages individuals to take high water safety precautions to mitigate risks.

It is essential to stay informed and take precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Included are important tips to remember when on or around high water:

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and water level updates. Listen to local authorities and follow safety advisories.

Avoid Walking through Flooded Areas: Just a few inches of fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet.

Stay Away from Riverbanks and Fast-Flowing Water: High water levels can erode riverbanks, making them unstable. Keep a safe distance and avoid swimming or playing near fast-flowing water.

Wear a Life Jacket: If you’re participating in water activities such as boating, kayaking or paddleboarding, always wear a properly fitted life jacket.

Be Aware of Cold Water: Cold water conditions can cause hypothermia.

Make high water safety a priority. By following high water safety tips, we can help prevent accidents and ensure a safer community.
