HPC Awards Historic Preservation Leaders
Awards to be Presented at City Council, Tuesday, May 29th, 5 p.m.

Aspen, CO – May 23, 2018 – The City of Aspen’s Historic Preservation Commission will be presenting its annual awards during City Council’s meeting on Tuesday, May 29th at 5 pm. The awards have been presented for 25 years to recognize projects that have made an outstanding contribution to historic preservation in Aspen, and to thank those responsible for the great work.
This year HPC will honor three projects; the careful restoration and expansion of Victorian era homes at 110 E. Bleeker Street and 229 W. Smuggler Avenue, and the voluntary AspenModern landmark designation and addition to 211/215 E. Hallam Street.
Recognition for these projects will be given to:
110 E. Bleeker Street, where great effort was made to remove paint which had been applied to the historic brick, and where the front porch, bay window and fencing, long ago removed, were reconstructed to exacting detail using historic photographs for guidance. 229 W. Smuggler Avenue, along Triangle Park, which was restored and expanded through a minimal, sympathetic and creative design, retaining the large yard and cottonwoods surrounding the site. Owner: David and Marsha Dowler. Architect: CCY Architects. Contractor: Koru LTD. Landscape architect: bluegreen. Interiors and Owner’s Representative: Cheryl Troxel, Nablo/Troxel Design. 211/215 E. Hallam, former studio of iconic Aspen photographer Ferenc Berko, which was re-sited on the lot to increase its public visibility and expanded into a duplex which will be the home of three generations of Berko family members and the Berko Photo Archives. Owner: Nora Berko, Howie Mallory, Mirte Mallory and Philip Jeffreys. Architect: Harry Teague Architects. Contractor: Crystal Springs Builders. Engineer: Resource Engineering Group, Inc. Landscape Architect: Connect One Design. Land Planner: Stan Clauson and Associates.
HPC will also honor the Aspen Historical Society for their archives building remodel, which has significantly upgraded the security and environmental conditions of the archive storage, improved the ability for the collection to grow in the future, and increased public access to this invaluable resource.
Finally, HPC honors the career of Harry Teague. An acclaimed architect, Teague has won multiple awards from HPC and others for his preservation work and for new design contributions that enrich Aspen’s built environment.
