Grand Opening of New City Hall
Wednesday, December 8 from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Aspen, Colorado –December 1, 2021– The community is invited to a Grand Opening event for the new Aspen City Hall on Wednesday, December 8 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Festivities commence at 11:30 a.m. with welcome speeches from staff and elected officials followed by a ribbon cutting and refreshments. Then starting at noon, the public is welcome to visit the interior of City Hall until 2 p.m. to walk through the common areas and meet the local artists whose works are displayed throughout the building.
The Grand Opening is the culmination of more than seven years of planning. The new City Hall better meets the service needs of Aspen’s residents, customers, and visitors by consolidating most City departments under one roof. After decades of paying market rates for leases for some City departments, the new facility has reduced taxpayers’ expenses and allows for better public service, business processes, and addresses accessibility issues.
The three-story, approximately 37,000 sq. ft. building, designed by local architect Charles Cunniffe and built by Shaw Construction, integrates bold structural elements and features a glass rotunda. City offices can be accessed from two entries with enhanced green spaces around the physical building. Other features include an elevator and grand staircase, integrated use of natural materials for exterior finishes, and community meeting space for public use.
The building is certified LEED Gold for the green building strategies employed during design and construction and earned a WELL building silver certification for the ways in which the building advances human health and well-being.
