Aphid Season Nearing Conclusion in Aspen
Aspen, Colorado – September 16, 2019 – The City of Aspen Parks and Open Space Department wants to let Aspen residents know that we are nearing the end of a season with particularly high numbers of aphids in our urban forest. Aphids, small sap-sucking insects were populous this year due to a variety of factors including high temperatures, last year’s drought and egg laying season, and tree growth this year due to moisture over the summer. While aphids can weaken trees, they are more of a nuisance than a significant problem to the trees. As the temperatures are getting cooler and the leaves beginning to change and fall from the trees, the aphid populations will diminish. Aphids leave behind a residue called honeydew that is common to find on our cars or outdoor furniture. You can use water and a mild detergent to wash this off.
