City of Aspen updates dog leash ordinance to reflect modern practices
Aspen, CO – The city of Aspen announces updates to its municipal code regarding dog leash regulations. These changes are designed to bring the city's ordinances in line with current practices seen across Aspen’s parks and open spaces. The updates also aim to provide clarity on where supervised off-leash play is permitted and where leash use remains in effect due to environmental, safety, or public use concerns.
The changes allow for supervised off-leash play in most city parks and open spaces, with the following guidelines in place to ensure public safety and enjoyment:
- Supervision: Dogs must be under the supervision of an owner, possessor, or keeper who remains within 150 feet and is actively attentive. Verbal control of the dog must be possible at all times.
- Leash Readiness: A suitable leash must be in the possession of the supervising individual, allowing quick restraint if necessary.
- Respect for Public Use: Off-leash play must not interfere with public enjoyment or safety. Dogs are not allowed to enter trails, playgrounds, wetland habitats, artificial turf areas, or any zones marked as leash-required or dog-prohibited.
- Event Restrictions: Dogs must avoid areas in active use by organized programs, park rentals, recreational activities, or athletic events.
- Specific Area Restrictions: Off-leash play is prohibited entirely at Yellow Brick Park and John Denver Sanctuary. Additionally, Herron Park has time restrictions, with off-leash play banned from 9:00 a.m. until dusk.
These updates are intended to balance the needs of dog owners with other park users and protect sensitive environments. The city of Aspen encourages dog owners to familiarize themselves with these new regulations and ensure that they follow all guidelines to help maintain safe and enjoyable public spaces for everyone.
