City of Aspen announces new director of public works

Tyler Christoff will begin new role on May 6

Aspen, CO - Tyler Christoff has been named as public works director for the city of Aspen. He replaces Scott Miller, who has been in the role since 2014 and will retire on May 31.

Christoff has worked in various public works roles with the city for the past 18 years. With an extensive background in public administration and a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, he brings a wealth of experience and innovative vision to the city’s public works director position.

Christoff, who has served as deputy director of public works since January of 2023, has exemplified his ability to provide programmatic leadership and strategic vision across multiple departments, including utilities, streets, engineering, storm water, asset management, transportation, and parking.

He also has served as the city’s director of utilities. With a focus on the water, electric, and utility billing divisions, Christoff oversaw the administration of a $20 million annual budget and spearheaded the implementation of capital improvement projects and long-term infrastructure planning.

“I’m honored to continue my work alongside our dedicated public works team to promote Aspen’s values in our natural and built environments,” Christoff said. “While sometimes hidden from daily view, our stewardship of the infrastructure builds upon the foresight of past Aspenites and allows us to provide a resilient and sustainable future for our next generation.”

Christoff’s career trajectory within the city has been marked by a consistent pursuit of excellence in public service. For the span of a decade, Christoff also served the city as utilities operations manager and senior project manager in the engineering department, demonstrating a passion for solving complex development challenges, understanding stakeholder interests, and applying technical competence to drive meaningful change.

In his new capacity as public works director, Christoff will continue to advance the city's mission of environmental stewardship and strategic planning. His leadership will be instrumental in guiding Aspen through future infrastructure projects, sustainability initiatives, and urban development endeavors.

"Tyler is a dynamic leader in the community and in the city of Aspen organization,” said City Manager Sara Ott. “He is looked to as a role model and provides thoughtful oversight of his duties. I am looking forward to working with him in his new role.”

Christoff will begin his new role on May 6.
