[ARCHIVED] City of Aspen to host first annual Art Cart Alpine Rally

City of Aspen to host first annual Art Cart Alpine Rally

Aspen, CO – The City of Aspen Special Events team proudly presents the first annual Art Cart Alpine Rally on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Aspen Recreation Center sledding hill.

The Art Cart Alpine Rally is an opportunity for teams to build a cart with skis, a snowboard, or a sled as the base and race other teams.  The event will have a kid’s category (16 and under) and an adult category (17 and older). Prizes will be awarded for the most creative art cart and the fastest art cart. For more information and to read the rules and regulations, visit aspenspecialevents.com/art-cart-alpine-rally/. The event will also have food trucks in the recreation parking area and a DJ starting at 5:30 p.m.

Special Events is partnering with the Red Brick Center of the Arts to host a Creative Happy Hour for teams to work on their cart before the event. The Creative Happy Hour will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Some supplies will be provided including nails and paint, other supplies should be brought by teams. For more information visit redbrickaspen.com.

Wesy Amour-Cook, Special Events Assistant Manager, gave insight into the creation of this event: “The Art Cart Alpine Rally idea was suggested at a city council meeting. It revives Aspen's Art Cart Derby, which was a soapbox derby from the 1980s. This nostalgic event is intended to bring our community together for some local, small-town fun.”

There will also be an interactive art projection mapping component with artist Sara Minerd (Lucia) who is based in Denver, Colorado. The Aspen Recreation Center grounds will serve as the canvas for the projection. To see Minerd’s projection mapping examples, visit luciavisuals.com.

This free City of Aspen event is designed to connect our community. The event is outdoors, please dress appropriately. Additionally, please utilize the free RFTA bus service to the Aspen Recreation Center, as parking will be closed to the public and reserved only for participants and vendors.
