City of Aspen Adopts a 15 Mile Per Hour Speed Limit
Community education first, enforcement second
Aspen, CO - To prioritize public safety and promote a pedestrian-friendly environment, the City of Aspen has adopted a 15 mile per hour (mph) speed limit. This decision aims to address concerns related to pedestrian safety and traffic flow for all road users.
Certain streets will be exempt from the newly adopted 15 mph speed limit, with Main Street maintaining a speed limit of 25 mph. Additionally, Cemetery Lane will experience a reduction in the speed limit, transitioning to 20 mph.
To help community members adjust, the city has created a two-tiered approach to implementation: community education will take precedence over enforcement in the initial phase, which will last until the end of the year. Educational initiatives will be utilized to inform residents, businesses and visitors about the new speed limit.Community members will see an outreach campaign that includes informational materials and signage designed to educate and engage the public.
Trish Aragon, City Engineer, stated: “Aspen is dedicated to fostering a safe community for residents and visitors. Through proactive community education, we aim to build awareness and ensure a successful implementation of this initiative.”
Following the introductory period of education and awareness, the police department will begin enforcement starting January 1, 2024. Enforcement measures will include warnings and tickets. This phased approach aims to provide a grace period for adjustment while ensuring a smooth and successful implementation of the new speed limit.
