City of Aspen seeks public input on Armory redevelopment
New survey posted on www.aspencommunityvoice.com
ASPEN, CO – The City of Aspen is seeking input from community members on redevelopment options for Armory Hall through a new survey posted on www.aspencommunityvoice.com.
The survey asks people’s preferences on what types of uses the building should accommodate, as well as their ideas on floor plans and other activations of the surrounding area, such as Conner Park and the alley to the north of the building. The survey questions are the same that were asked of over 200 people who attended an open house at the Armory on Oct. 4, 2023.
The survey is open until Oct. 30, 2023, at 5 p.m. The results will be compiled and presented to Aspen City Council during a work session scheduled for Nov. 13, 2023, when it’s anticipated that the board will provide direction for next steps.
Over the past year, City staff has conducted seven meetings with Aspen City Council, culminating in a recent work session on June 5, 2023. The Council reached consensus that the primary focus of Armory Hall should revolve around community use, aligning with the key findings of community outreach efforts. These findings pinpointed specific areas of interest, including casual dining, a community center, versatile multi-purpose spaces, non-profit services, and accessible retail options.
This fall, City staff and consultants are conducting a "test fit" as part of concept planning, aimed at determining the optimal square footage allocation for various potential uses.
The current direction of this redevelopment project is rooted in extensive public outreach and robust community engagement, which encompassed two online questionnaires, an open house, two focus group meetings, and surveys. A resounding theme emerged from this engagement - the community's need for a central gathering place. Armory Hall is envisioned as the heart of Aspen, a welcoming community living room to be enjoyed by locals.
