City of Aspen Welcomes New Director of Communications

William Porter to Lead Communication Initiatives and Foster Community Engagement

Aspen, Colorado – May 25, 2023 – The city of Aspen welcomes William Porter as the new Director of Communications, a position that reflects the city's unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant community built on transparency, inclusivity, and open dialogue.

Collaborating closely with the Communications team, Porter will drive the implementation of the city's community visioning and civic engagement efforts, fostering inclusive partnerships within the community. By promoting transparent and accountable communication channels, he aims to strengthen the relationships between government officials and the public, cultivating trust as a foundation for the city's success in pursuing its initiatives, strategies, and responses.

"I am truly honored to join the City of Aspen and lead its communication efforts," said Porter. "I believe that effective communication is the cornerstone of a vibrant and inclusive community. Together, we will listen, engage, and foster dialogue that reflects the diversity and values of Aspen. I look forward to working alongside the residents, businesses, and dedicated city staff in shaping our collective future."  

Porter brings a track record of applicable experience and accomplishments to his new position. Previously, he served as the Public Information Officer and Interim Director of Communications for Adams County, where he skillfully navigated the county's communication strategy during a period of transition, including the successful launch of a new health department. His experience also encompasses roles as Press Secretary for the Denver City Council and Public Information Officer for Boulder County, where he gained expertise in crisis communications and community outreach strategies. He has contributed his strategic insights as a Communications Director for two prominent Colorado-founded companies, which further broadened his perspective across the public and private sectors.  

  Alissa Farrell, the city's Administrative Services Director, expressed enthusiasm for Porter's role, “We wholeheartedly welcome William Porter and his leadership in our communication efforts. His extensive experience in strategic communication, coupled with a genuine commitment to engaging residents, businesses, and visitors, will play a pivotal role in amplifying community voices and facilitating collaborative decision-making.” 

William Porter will begin his full-time role on June 5, 2023. The City of Aspen is confident that his leadership, combined with the collective expertise and dedication of the Communications team, will further strengthen the city's communication efforts, and foster a more connected and prosperous Aspen.
