Aspen, CO – July 22, 2021 – The City of Aspen is seeking community feedback on the renovation of the Iselin Tennis and Pickleball Courts. The City is taking feedback through early September via Aspen Community Voice at www.aspencommunityvoice.com/pickleball and at an in-person meet and greet on Wednesday, July 28 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Iselin Courts next to the Aspen Recreation Center.  Community members can learn more about the project and share their ideas online or at the event.

“We have a very passionate and dedicated pickleball community in Aspen and we are looking forward to gathering feedback,” said Cory Vandeer Veen, direction of recreation.  “Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport for all ages, and we look forward to renovating the facility with the community’s input in mind.  The court usage at Iselin has had double digit increases in the last few years and we are excited to move forward with needed renovations.”

Pickleball made its debut Aspen in 2016 when the City converted one tennis court at Iselin to 4 pickleball courts.

Pickleball programming grew 30% between 2018 and 2019 and the City offered winter indoor and summer pickleball.  That programming and growth was interrupted by Covid-19 in 2020.   This year, the department has offered a mixture of clinics, private rentals, tournaments, semi-organized, and drop-in pickleball play.

The pickleball courts are on a repurposed tennis courts and are not regulation size and don’t currently meet the needs of the pickleball players.

The questionnaire on Aspen Community Voice is aimed at gathering the community’s feedback for pickleball court design and amenities along with delivery of the service and programming

The Iselin Court renovation project is in the Recreation department's long-range plan, which is supported by City leadership and City Council. The public’s input will be considered in the initial design phase this fall. The 2022 capital budget is in process and will go in front of the City Council in the fall for approval.
