Aspen, CO – January 17, 2018 – The City of Aspen Environmental Health & Sustainability Department is offering free radon test kits throughout the winter. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the soil and enters our homes. Over 50% of the home tested in Aspen have radon level above the Environmental Protection Agency’s action level of 4 pCi/L. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and second leading cause for smokers. The City of Aspen wants its citizens to know there is something they can do to reduce radon in their homes. The first step is to test.
Testing involves putting the kit in the lowest living space in the house for three days and then mailing the kit to a laboratory. Results are returned in approximately two weeks. Environmental Health staff will help people interpret their test results.
Depending on the level found, there are several things that residents can do to lower radon levels, and information will be provided to homeowners who are interested in having radon remediation work done.
For more information or to pick-up a test kit, contact City of Aspen Environmental Health & Sustainability at www.cityofaspen.com or 920-5039, 130 S. Galena St., 2nd Floor.
