ASPEN, CO – October 14, 2019 – The City of Aspen is kicking off two new outreach initiatives aimed at collecting insights and opinions from the public on important community questions. The public is invited to share feedback on Paepcke Transit Hub Improvements and Galena Plaza.

“Our City initiatives are driven by the public and we really look forward to hearing from the community on these topics,” said Tracy Trulove, City of Aspen Communications Director. “The Aspen Community Voice website is the central hub to learn more and share your opinions on a wide range of issues in Aspen. Join us online or at in-person events to express your opinions, share your ideas, and have your say.”

PAEPCKE TRANSIT HUB IMPROVEMENTS

Paepcke Park is the second busiest transit hub in the City, with three popular bus stops, WE-Cycle stations, Car-to-Go, and its central location in town. Following resident input, the City of Aspen Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, and Council direction, the City of Aspen is exploring potential areas for improvement at this transit hub along Main Street and Garmisch Street.

“There are a number of critical issues that impact the safety and user experience at the hub,” said Mike Horvath, city engineer II and project manager. “This outreach is all about asking the public about their observations and ideating potential improvements.”

In addition to submitting ideas on Aspen Community Voice, community members can participate in pop-up events at Paepcke Park on October 16 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-8:30 p.m. Comments can also be submitted via email to PaepckeTransitHub@gmail.com. All input will be collected and used to focus the direction of conceptual design process in Phase II.

GALENA PLAZA

With the seat of Aspen City government moving to the new City offices building, the City would like to create what will be a more comprehensive civic green in the space now known as Galena Plaza. The City is launching an engagement and outreach process to investigate enhancements to the area.

“Goals of this outreach are to reconsider Galena Plaza as a key public space link between Aspen Mountain and the Roaring Fork River, identify outdoor elements that contribute to a well-connected public space representative of the adjacent civic uses and re-envision the current Galena Plaza design through community engagement,” said Michael Tunte, City of Aspen parks and recreation landscape architect and construction manager.

The City is hosting three topic focus outreach meetings at the Pitkin County Library Dunaway Room to gather feedback and insights from the community. The first two outreach meetings will be held on Monday, October 21. The first meeting from 9-10:30 a.m. will focus on maintenance, operations, transportation and County facilities. The second meeting from 2-3:30 p.m. will focus around park users, tourism, and recreation.

On Tuesday, October 22, the city will host a community wide focus meeting at the Pitkin County Library Dunaway Room from 4:30-6 p.m. All are welcome to participate in any and all meetings. If you are unable to participate in the in-person meetings, visit aspencommunityvoice.com/GalenaPlaza to share your insights.

The City’s design team will present three new concepts for this area. The site plan concepts will be developed through collecting insights and feedback from neighbors and the general public.
