Aspen, CO – April 25, 2019 – Right-of-way utility work from Mill St. to the west of the parking garage entrance is expected to be completed on schedule. During the week of April 29, crews will shift to the right-of-way utility work and the Rio Grande Pl. street closure to the east. Rio Grande Pl. will be closed from the east side of the parking garage entrance to Founders Place (east of Tasters Pizza).

Motorists are advised to be alert for parking garage access changes the week of April 29. Garage users will enter the parking garage via N. Mill St. (upper/west entrance) and will exit via Rio Grande Pl. (lower/north exit) to Mill St. There will be no access to the parking garage via Spring St. This section of road is expected to remain closed 24/7 until the beginning of June.

“Phase II, which includes new and upgraded utility infrastructure, is anticipated to wrap up in early June,” said project manager Robert Schober. “Construction will be on a hold during Food & Wine and will resume with building construction activities, including excavation, on Monday, June 17. The project is progressing nicely.”

Schedule and routes are approximate, weather dependent and subject to change. Business and pedestrian access remains open with some pedestrian detours in place. Please follow signage and flagger instructions.

Parking Closures

All street parking along Rio Grande Pl. is closed and will remain closed through the beginning of June. Expect periodic parking closures in several spaces in the Rio Grande Parking Garage during Phase II construction.

At this time no full closures of the parking garage or its north entrance are scheduled as part of city offices construction. However, based on site conditions, there may be periodic full closures of the parking garage.

Announcement from the Parking Department

As part of regularly scheduled annual parking garage striping a full garage closure will be required. The garage will close at approximately 6 PM on Friday, May 17 and is anticipated to reopen by 12 PM (noon) on Sunday, May 19. For questions please call the parking department at 970-920-5267.

Staircase Closures

The blue staircase connecting Rio Grande Place and the plaza (staircase west of Tasters) is anticipated to have intermittent closures. During closures, please use Jail Trail for access.

Intermittent closures of the west parking garage staircase (connecting the parking garage and housing/bank access) are anticipated. Additionally, the south sidewalk along Rio Grande Place remains closed, please follow detour signage. The north sidewalk (on the Rio Grande Park side) remains open.

At a later June date, construction activities will require a full closure of the lower section of the staircase (between Rio Grande Pl. and Parking Garage level 2). The date of this closure is to be determined, but the lower section of the staircase will close for the remaining duration of building construction, anticipated to be complete by summer of 2021.
