Meet the Galena Street asphalt mural artist on June 4

Aspen, CO— As part of the city of Aspen’s public art program and in collaboration with the city of Aspen engineering department, a new pavement mural is being created to enhance pedestrian safety along the South Galena Street corridor, between Hopkins and Cooper avenues.

The painting began on May 28 and will continue through June 6. Once completed, the mural will remain on display until it naturally fades. Community members are invited to meet the artist, Anthony Garcia Sr., and learn more about the project. This is a unique opportunity to explore how art and public safety intersect, and to ask the artist directly about the inspiration and meaning behind the mural.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday, June 4
  • Time: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Location: Hyman Avenue Mall at Galena Street
  • The free event will feature a Q&A with the artist, DJ, popsicles, and an interactive art station for all ages.

This project blends public art and public safety to raise awareness and enhance the streetscape, encouraging slower driving and a more walkable community.

“Aside from being fun, pavement art enhances public safety for pedestrians by improving visibility, encouraging drivers to slow down, and contributing to a more walkable community,”

said Jack Danneberg, P.E., Senior Project Manager, city of Aspen engineering department.

The Galena Street asphalt mural by Garcia Sr. features his signature ombre style and vivid, urban-inspired colors. Bold, interlocking shapes flow across intersections in hues like turquoise, burnt orange, and deep blue. The design captures movement and energy while reflecting unity and community connection.
