Join the Community Development Department Thursday February 28th for a celebration of Stephen Kanipe’ s amazing career with the City, and to welcome Mike Metheny as the new Chief Building Official. This community event will be Feb 28th 3:30-5:30 at the Police Station Community Room. Light snacks and great memories will be shared. We hope you can join us!
Stephen’s last day as the CBO will be March 1st, with Mike taking on responsibilities on March 2nd. Mike has worked for the city for the last 13 years, most recently as the Inspections Manager for the Building Department.
Stephen is retiring after working for local government for over 30 years. Kanipe started with the City of Aspen in 1989 as an entry level plans examiner when the building department was shared between the City and County, taking over as the Chief Building Official in 1995. Over the three decades Kanipe served the City of Aspen and the building community, he wrote and reviewed three books on energy code, and under his leadership the City of Aspen won the Harvard Innovations in Government Award in 2007 for the REMP program, which was used as a model for governments around the country that have replicated the program.
