Explore the Future of Armory Hall: City of Aspen to host Open House on October 4th
Updates On Redevelopment Process, Guided Tours, Live Music, And Food
Aspen, CO – The City of Aspen is pleased to invite all community members and stakeholders with an interest in the redevelopment of the historic Armory Hall to join us for an upcoming open house event. This event will take place at the historic Armory Hall located in downtown Aspen on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This open house presents a unique opportunity for the public to explore Armory Hall one last time before it undergoes transformation into what is envisioned as a vibrant community hub. Guided tours of the building will provide historical insights and a firsthand look at the building's potential and limitations.
"We encourage the entire community to gather in this historic space, offering the chance to review preliminary concepts, engage with our design team, and share your valuable input," stated Jennifer Phelan, Development Manager for the City's Capital Asset Department. "Public feedback and community outreach have played a pivotal role in shaping the future of this building, and this event serves as a check-in with the community to determine the way forward."
Over the past year, City staff has conducted seven meetings with Aspen City Council, culminating in a recent work session on June 5, 2023. The Council reached consensus that the primary focus of Armory Hall should revolve around community use, aligning with the key findings of community outreach efforts. These findings pinpointed specific areas of interest, including casual dining, a community center, versatile multi-purpose spaces, non-profit services, and accessible retail options.
This fall, City staff and consultants are conducting a "test fit" as part of concept planning, aimed at determining the optimal square footage allocation for various potential uses. At the open house, attendees can anticipate the unveiling of conceptual designs and floor plans, providing an exciting glimpse into the future of Armory Hall. The event will also feature catered food and live music to enhance the experience, encouraging attendees to envision the transformation of the space.
The current direction of this redevelopment project is rooted in extensive public outreach and robust community engagement, which encompassed two online questionnaires, an open house, two focus group meetings, and surveys. A resounding theme emerged from this engagement - the community's need for a central gathering place. Armory Hall is envisioned as the heart of Aspen, a welcoming community living room to be enjoyed by locals.
After gathering public input from the open house and an online survey, staff will present to Council in a work session on Nov. 13, where it’s anticipated that the board will provide direction for next steps.
The estimated cost of the Armory Hall remodel falls within the range of $18 million to $23 million.
