The City of Aspen has installed a 92 kilowatt solar electric PV system at the water treatment plant. Since October 2008, the system has generated more than 314,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, enough energy to power 27 homes for a year. In total, this array has avoided 197 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to this, the City designed the Burlingame affordable housing neighborhood with solar thermal systems to help preheat hot water in the homes. The Aspen Recreation Center is also exploring solar thermal to heat water for the pool.
The City of Aspen encourages events to go solar by offering use of Sunny the Solar Roller, a portable PV system.
